The exhibition “Man and his Symbols, A Move to Coherence” exhibits the works of four artists from four countries, Nille Bech (Denmark), Birdy Tg (France), Nick Coley (England), and Eva-Lena Martinson (Sweden)

Man and his Symbols, A Move to Coherence The title of this exhibition is taken from Carl Gustav Jung´s influential book Man and his Symbols. From the moment we are born we are overwhelmed by signs and symbols and they influence us directly and indirectly. Usually a sign is specific for one purpose while it can have other associations as well but a symbol is simultaneously itself and something else. It is quite wide-ranging and has different meanings in different societies. Each symbol is a key to understand the world.

Arts, in a general sense, and visual art in a specific sense, can be considered the outpouring of the unconscious by the conscious mind. In other words, each individual is different from another one not only by the genes and fingerprints but by dreams. The unconscious uses its symbolic language and the dreams are the doors to the unconscious.

Therefore, the symbols implemented in dreams can reveal certain truths about the human psyche and offer a bridge to a form of mental integrity. The modern man is psychologically suffering because his mind is dissociated and has lost its coherence. Jung´s cure for this split laying deep within a state of deep meaninglessness and alienation for those in the modern world is to find a personal symbol, myth, and meaning for the individual life that brings the total psyche a sense of purpose and coherence to the cosmos.

The artworks presented here reflect the unconscious of the artists in one way or another. Viewing these pieces will eventually lead the artists and the viewers to more coherence in their mind and and in association with the world around.
